I had the pleasure of reviewing a very practical new book called ‘Scorecard Best Practices: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation’ by Raef Lawson, Toby Hatch, and Denis Desroches (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Denis was my first Hyperion Performance Scorecard Instructor and Toby is my go-to pro for how Scorecarding fits into extended performance management. These folks have been designing and implementing enterprise scorecards for over 10 years – they are true pioneers.
While Raef, Toby & Denis could have easily just told us the best practices, they decided to let us hear it directly from the front-lines: this book is based on surveys of almost 400 respondents from 44 countries!
The book comes out in November, but Wiley has generously given us 32 pages of the book to share with you now. See the link below.
In addition to the table of contents and introduction, the excerpt includes Chapter 5 on the organizing frameworks that are used in the real world. They include:
- Norton & Kaplan’s Balanced Scorecard
- Value Dynamics (Arthur Andersen/Accenture)
- Malcolm Baldrige Award
- EFQM – European Foundation for Quality Management
- Six Sigma
- EVA – Economic Value Add (Stern Stewart)
- APIC – Army Performance Improvement Criteria
- Performance Prism (Cranfield University)
- ValueReporting (PricewaterhouseCoopers)
- Logic Model
- Customized Frameworks
If you have anything to do with Scorecarding in your organization, or you are interested in learning how other organizations use them, this is a great book with lots of candid case studies and proven tips & traps.
