There have been a number of BPM, CPM, EPM (and BI) maturity models presented by vendors, consultants, and analysts that show the adoption of systems & processes over time. These are intended as a high-level diagnostic tool to help an enterprise communicate their current state and their aspirations for becoming a “performance-accountable organization.” Here is a survey of the more popular models.
AMR
AMR’s 2004 EPM maturity model (Carline Durocher and John Hagerty) moves from “technology driven” to “philosophy and technology” driven approachs to EPM through 4 stages:
1. Operating
2. Integrating
3. Optimizing
4. Innovating

TDWI
In 2005, TDWI’s Wayne Eckerson put together a beautiful (“Tufte-esque”) BI Maturity Model at http://www.tdwi.org/Publications/display.aspx?ID=7288 (you can view the PDF or even order the color poster). It is a multivariate chart that includes:
- the 6 phases of BI Adoption (from Prenatal, through Child, to Sage)
- Local control vs. Enterprise standards for types of systems (financial, executive, etc) and their scope (individual, departmental, etc.)
- BI Usage by user type
- BI Insight comparing data freshness to decision latency
- Business value and ROI shoing Cost and Value through the cycles of executive perceptions (cost center, drive the business, etc.)
IBM
IBM has a “Maturity of Information Use” model that is applicable to xPM, you can find it here on slide #2: http://mediazone.brighttalk.com/comm/sitedata/f2217062e9a397a1dca429e7d70bc6ca/download/977_Evan's%20webinar%20charts%20a%20final.ppt
Gartner
I picked up a copy of Betsy Burton and Nigel Rayner’s newest (2007) CPM Maturity model at the BI Symposium in Chicago, but I gave it to a client. At first glance, it reminded me of AMR’s model. You may be able to get it here (especially if you’re already a Gartner client): http://www.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?id=500007
The OLAP Report
Nigel has done the Strategic Performance Management maturity scale here:

SEI-CMM
There are a number of CPM, BPM, EPM maturity models that take their cue from the SEI’s CMM (Software Engineering Institute, Capability Maturity Model). Here’s one that you can even take in Dutch! http://www.ackinas.com/ackinas_proc.php?action=maturitytest&language=uk
